Strengths
- The closest thing digital forensics has to a neutral, government-backed reference standard — and it is free.
- Directly relevant to admissibility: a documented validation of your tool against a published dataset is exactly what Rule 702 reliability argument is made of.
- Datasets come with documented ground truth, so you can check whether your method actually found what was there.
- Useful to lawyers as well as examiners: it is where you look to test whether an opposing expert validated their tooling.
Limitations
- Not training. There is no curriculum, no instructor and no assessment — you bring the method and NIST supplies the evidence.
- Requires enough existing skill to design a test, which puts it out of reach as a starting point.
- CFReDS now spans an archive domain and a newer portal, so locating a specific dataset takes some navigating.
- Tool test reports lag current tool versions, because testing takes time.
