The mandatory route for practising US lawyers. There is no national CLE accreditor — each state's court, bar or CLE board sets hours, and some now mandate technology credits.

- Cost

- Prerequisites
- Admission to the bar of the state in question.
- Format
- Accredited courses, live or on demand, reported to the state's CLE board. Accreditation is granted by that board, not by any national body.
- Length
- Annual or multi-year compliance cycles depending on the state.
- Renewal
- Continuous. Compliance recurs every cycle for as long as you practise.
- Accreditation
- Course-by-course, by each state's CLE board or bar. A course accredited in one state is not automatically accredited in another.

Strengths
- Mandatory, so the time is already budgeted — the only question is what you spend it on.
- Florida's technology requirement and New York's cybersecurity, privacy and data-protection requirement mean digital-evidence training can satisfy an obligation you already have.
- Directly relevant: nearly every US jurisdiction has now adopted the technology-competence duty in Comment 8 to ABA Model Rule 1.1, tracked publicly at the LawNext tech-competence tracker.
- Accreditation is checkable — you can confirm a provider's approval with your own state board before paying.
Limitations
- Entirely state-specific. We verified Texas and Florida directly; we could NOT verify the current New York or California hour figures, because those sites blocked automated access. Confirm your own state's requirement at its own site.
- CLE credit measures attendance, not competence. Sitting through three hours of technology CLE does not make anyone able to examine a forensic expert.
- Technical certifications such as GIAC or IACIS generally do not carry CLE credit. IACIS's own certification pages do not mention CLE at all, and any credit would depend on an individual self-submission to your state board.
- Comment 8 is an ethics comment rather than a standalone disciplinary rule in most jurisdictions, and it mandates no specific number of hours.
