Strengths

  • Core Competencies for Digital Forensics is effectively a free syllabus — it tells you what a competent examiner is supposed to be able to do.
  • Widely cited, which makes these documents useful as the standard you measured yourself against when your method is challenged.
  • Covers audio, video and imaging as well as computer forensics, which is where many real cases actually live.
  • Equally useful to a lawyer: it is a checklist for probing whether an examiner followed accepted practice.

Limitations

  • Standards, not training. They describe what good looks like; they do not teach you to do it.
  • Consensus documents move slowly relative to the technology they describe.
  • Membership is gated behind attending meetings, so contributing is not open to everyone.
  • We could not confirm from the documents page whether every publication is free to download.
